TROPICA PLAZA
Location: Nosara, Guancaste
Type: Commercial
Size: 1800 sqm
Status: Unbuilt
When designing this strip mall, the goal was to move beyond convention — to create a rhythmic, distinguished, and unique composition that reflects our brutalist yet tropical sensibility.
Set along a long, linear property, the typology naturally suggested a strip layout. Yet we wanted to reinterpret it — to craft a commercial building that feels sculptural and alive, rather than repetitive or static.
The design begins with a minimal, single-story concrete volume, pure and horizontal in its expression. As the building unfolds, it transforms dramatically — rising into a two-story structure defined by a rhythmic sequence of A-frame palapas. This repetition creates a dynamic façade that captures attention from the street while maintaining balance and coherence.
Here, tropical warmth meets brutalist geometry: concrete anchors the composition in permanence, while the palapa forms introduce lightness, rhythm, and craft. Together they create a structure that is both functional and poetic — a new interpretation of the everyday commercial space, grounded in material honesty and architectural rhythm.
